Global Water Awareness and Bushmans Tanks

March marks the Global Water Day and here at Bushmans we are calling it the ‘ Global Water Awareness Month’ – Let’s Talk Water Conservation!

Australia is one of the driest continents on Earth, yet our daily water use is often higher than we realise. As we step into Global Water Awareness Month this March, it’s the perfect time to rethink our habits and find simple, practical ways to save water. At Bushmans, we don’t just manufacture water tanks—we’re are on the mission of building a culture of conservation to save Australia’s water. From rainwater harvesting to smarter household water use, every drop saved counts.

If you haven’t followed our social pages yet, now’s the time! Throughout the month, we’re sharing 10 practical water-saving tips to help you reduce waste in everyday activities like gardening, washing cars, and even how long you shower.

We’re also tackling myths and facts about water conservation with the help of Dr. Anika Molesworth, a leading water expert, who’s breaking down common misconceptions with real science. Our partnership with Anika began in 2023 when she chose Bushmans Tanks for her Outback Climate Smart Home, a project dedicated to building resilience in Australia’s toughest conditions. (You can read more about it here.) Since then, she has continued to champion water conservation, and we highly recommend following her for expert insights and practical advice.

Why Water Conservation Matters More Than Ever

Australia’s climate has always been unpredictable, with long dry spells followed by intense rain events. While we can’t control the weather, we can control how we manage water in our homes, farms, and communities. Wasting water doesn’t just increase household bills—it puts unnecessary strain on natural water sources, making it harder for our country to manage droughts and water shortages.

Many people assume that saving water requires big lifestyle changes, but small adjustments in daily routines can add up to significant savings. For example, did you know that simply fixing a tap dripping can save up to 11,350 liters annually? Or that choosing native, drought-tolerant plants in your garden can reduce water consumption by up to 30%? These are just a couple of the practical tips we’re sharing this month to help you make a difference without sacrificing comfort or convenience.

Small, everyday actions can make a significant impact on water conservation, but recent events show that we must also think bigger. ABC News released an article about the water crisis in the Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula – South Australia, as a stark reminder of just how fragile our water supply is. With many households running out of rainwater and struggling to access deliveries, the South Australian government has stepped in to establish emergency water collection points, highlighting the urgent need for proactive water management. As drought conditions become more frequent, relying on traditional water sources alone is no longer enough—we need long-term solutions like rainwater tanks, proper storage maintenance, and smarter water use to stay prepared.

For those already taking steps to store and manage their water supply, regular maintenance and the right setup are key to getting the most out of every drop. Read more about how to keep your rainwater tank clean here.

Built to Last – A Factory Perspective on Water Conservation

Behind every Bushmans water tank is a dedicated team of skilled professionals ensuring that every product meets the highest standards before it reaches homes, farms, and businesses. Factory supervisors play a vital role in this process, overseeing every stage of production—from selecting the raw material suppliers to final quality checks—to guarantee that Bushmans tanks are built for durability, efficiency, and long-term water conservation.

Factory Supervisors guide their teams for safe and efficient machine operations, making sure that every tank is moulded and assembled according to strict Australian regulations. Before any tank leaves the factory, it undergoes rigorous inspections, checking for structural integrity, proper fittings, and compliance with industry standards.

“Our job doesn’t stop at making tanks—it’s about making sure they last. We inspect every tank to ensure it meets Australian water tank standards & regulations and can withstand harsh weather conditions. A well-built tank means fewer leaks, less maintenance, and more water saved over time. When a Bushmans tank leaves our factory, we know it’s ready to do its job—helping customers store water efficiently and reliably.” – Garry Paterson, Production Manager at Bushmans Tanks

This attention to quality is critical for long-term water conservation. A strong, well-made tank allows customers to store more water during wet seasons, ensuring a reliable supply during droughts and reducing dependence on mains water. Properly manufactured tanks also prevent leaks and premature wear, which can lead to water loss and costly replacements. Our factory teams are committed to ensuring that every product that leaves our facility is ready to help Australians conserve water efficiently and sustainably for years to come.

While high-quality water tanks provide a strong foundation for water conservation, how we use and manage water daily is just as important. Many people believe they are saving water through certain habits, but misconceptions about water usage can lead to unnecessary waste. That’s why we’ve continued our partnership with Dr. Anika Molesworth—to help grow awareness around water sustainability and smarter water practices.

Debunking Water-Saving Myths with Dr. Anika Molesworth

Water conservation is often surrounded by myths—some well-intentioned, but many misleading. That’s why we’ve partnered with Dr. Anika Molesworth, an expert in water sustainability, to break down the facts and fiction around saving water.

One common myth is that short showers don’t make much of a difference—but in reality, cutting just one minute off your shower can save up to 10 liters per person per day. Another widespread belief is that hand-washing dishes is more water-efficient than using a dishwasher, but modern dishwashers often use less water, especially when run on an eco-cycle.

Dr. Anika is diving into these myths and more, sharing insights into how small, everyday choices can lead to big water savings. From the reality of Australia’s water scarcity to the impact of urban rainwater tanks, she’s tackling some of the biggest misconceptions about water conservation. With real data and practical advice, she’s showing how small, informed choices can make a huge difference in securing our water future.

Simple Steps to Make a Difference

If you’re looking for easy ways to cut down on water use, here are some of the top habits we’re highlighting this month:

Harvest rainwater – Installing a rainwater tank helps you make the most of natural rainfall, reducing reliance on mains water for gardening, flushing toilets, or even washing clothes.

Water gardens efficiently – Watering early in the morning or late in the evening reduces evaporation. Drip irrigation and mulch can help plants retain moisture longer.

Fix leaks fast – A single dripping tap can waste thousands of liters of water per year. Check for hidden leaks in toilets, pipes, and irrigation systems.

Upgrade household appliances – Water-efficient washing machines, dishwashers, and low-flow showerheads can dramatically reduce water use without impacting performance.

Be mindful of outdoor water use – Washing cars with a bucket instead of a hose, sweeping driveways instead of hosing them down, and using rainwater for outdoor tasks all help conserve water.
